Serving patients seeking weight loss surgery in Fresno and the surrounding area

Daniel Swartz, MD, FACS, FRCS(C) and Edward Felix, MD, FACS, are highly experienced, nationally and internationally recognized bariatric surgeons who have performed more than 4,000 successful weight loss surgeries. They specialize in laparoscopic bariatric surgery, a minimally invasive approach that greatly reduces patients' discomfort and risk of complications.

Dr. Swartz completed his surgical training at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and served a fellowship in advanced laparoscopic surgery and surgical endoscopy at the University of Maryland. He began his career as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of California, San Diego, where he developed a laparoscopic bariatric surgery program. He joined Dr. Felix at Advanced Bariatric Center of Fresno, California, in 2002, jointly managing this high-volume laparoscopic bariatric surgery practice. Drs. Swartz and Felix offer various surgical procedures, including laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, laparoscopic adjustable band and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.

Dr. Felix completed his surgical training at the University of Illinois, and served a fellowship in surgical oncology at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He began his career as an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Illinois before moving to Fresno, California, in 1978. One of the pioneers of laparoscopic surgery, Dr. Felix performed the first laparoscopic procedure in San Joaquin Valley and has since performed thousands of advanced laparoscopic operations.

Both Dr. Swartz and Dr. Felix have contributed greatly to the advancement of the field of laparoscopic surgery by establishing a laparoscopic bariatric surgery fellowship program and performing important research, the results of which have been published in many peer-reviewed medical journals. In 2007, Advanced Bariatric Center of Fresno began offering a specialized comprehensive medical weight loss program for patients who do not meet the criteria for bariatric surgery and/or are considered too high risk. This intensive, individualized six-month program involves the center's multidisciplinary team, including clinical psychologist, fitness trainer and nutritionist.

Drs. Swartz and Felix believe that obesity is a chronic condition that can have a devastating effect on one's physical and psychological well-being. This is why they are dedicated to helping their patients achieve safe weight loss and improve their overall health by providing them with advanced bariatric surgery procedures. Understanding that surgery is only the first step on the journey towards a healthier, happier life, Drs. Swartz and Felix offer their patients long-term guidance and support through follow-up visits, informational seminars, support groups and consultations with a dietician and a fitness specialist.

At Advanced Bariatric Center of Fresno, patients are treated with the utmost respect and compassion. Drs. Swartz and Felix personally meet with all of their patients to learn about their weight loss goals and perform thorough exams and medical history evaluations. They use this information to determine which bariatric procedure — Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, laparoscopic adjustable gastric band or laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy — is most suitable for each patient. Drs. Swartz and Felix take the time to explain the proposed treatment in great detail, including an open discussion of all possible complications. They also encourage their patients to ask as many questions as possible, and they provide clear, thoughtful answers. This extensive consultation process helps Drs. Swartz and Felix prepare their patients for surgery both physically and psychologically, which in turn leads to better treatment outcomes.
