Thomas Bass, MD, FACS, is a board-certified general surgeon who specializes in weight loss surgery. He completed two additional fellowship training programs in minimally invasive surgery and surgical critical care. Dr. Bass serves as a proctor for the Lap Band system, a position that requires him to teach Lap Band surgery to other Florida surgeons. In addition, he is one of the first and only surgeons in the Fort Myers area to perform the ROSE and Stomaphyx procedures, which treat patients who struggle with weight loss following bariatric surgery.

Dr. Bass and his surgical team at Gulf Coast Bariatrics specialize in laparoscopic, minimally invasive weight loss surgeries that promote quicker recovery and minimize pain, including Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, Lap Band gastric banding, and the latest bariatric surgery technique, sleeve gastrectomy, which helps patients prepare for more invasive weight loss surgeries.

He also performs ROSE and Stomaphyx – two reversible revision weight loss surgeries that promote minimal recovery periods and no visible scarring. During these procedures, Dr. Bass tightens stretched stomach pouches in recovered bariatric surgery patients to help them achieve their weight loss goals. Performed through the mouth, these procedures take approximately 30 minutes to complete and allow patients to return to their daily activities in one day.

The Gulf Coast Bariatrics team performs all procedures at local facilities, as well as at the Memorial Regional Hospital, which has been named a "Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence" by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

As part of its ongoing commitment to patients, Gulf Coast Bariatrics offers a comprehensive weight loss program; for those interested, a complimentary educational seminar is available. In addition, they encourage patients to participate in their follow-up programs, which are designed to meet the specific needs of post-bariatric-surgery patients.

What Do Patients Say About Dr. Bass?

"I had been morbidly obese for more than 20 years, struggling with every diet out there without success. After much research, I chose Lap Band surgery to help me achieve my goal. With the band and the support of Dr. Bass and his weight loss team, I was finally able to lose 100 pounds and regain my health and self esteem. I am loving life!" —Judy, Lap Band patient

"I have been extremely overweight my entire life, with my first attempt at weight loss at 10 years old. I have tried every diet, program, system and pill. Sometimes I lost weight and sometimes I didn't, but always gained it back. I came to a point in my life where I was 5'2" and 240 pounds. I did not know what else to do or where to go. I was miserable, uncomfortable and unhealthy. After seeing a fellow teacher have success with Lap Band, I decided that surgery was my option. I made an appointment for a seminar, then a consultation with Dr. Bass. The process went quickly and I found myself with a surgery date. Wow, was I excited! On December 24, 2007, I had my Lap Band surgery. I went in wearing a size 20. In April 2009, I was 85 pounds thinner. I just bought 3 pairs of pants in a size 8. I have never in my life been a size 8. I feel healthy, comfortable, confident and HAPPY! Thanks to Dr. Bass and his wonderful staff I have a life that I am enjoying to the fullest!" —Eileen, Lap Band patient
