Shanu N. Kothari, MD, Matthew T. Baker, MD, and Brandon T. Grover, DO, are board-certified general surgeons with fellowship training in advanced laparoscopic surgery, minimally invasive/bariatric surgery and bariatric surgery, respectively. The doctors are members of the surgical staff at the award-winning Gundersen Lutheran Minimally Invasive Bariatric Surgery Clinic named a Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. More than 650 patients have lost an average of 77 percent of their excess body weight within one year of surgery under the guidance of Drs. Kothari, Baker and Grover.
The surgical staff at Gundersen Lutheran believes bariatric surgery can be a life-changing event. To prepare prospective patients for this first step toward their new lives, the surgeons invite them to attend an informational seminar that thoroughly reviews the benefits and risks of bariatric surgery. Patients then undergo consultations and assessments, and meet with a nutritionist to learn about eating habits that lead to lasting weight loss. After the surgery, patients are encouraged to attend the laparoscopic gastric bypass support group meetings led by a member of the weight loss surgical team.

The minimally invasive weight loss procedure offered at Gundersen Lutheran is laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, which incorporates a small camera and instruments. The surgeons encourage patients to consider this option because it promotes faster recovery, reduces pain and lessens the risk of infections and hernias.

"Dr. Kothari and the bariatric team at Gundersen Lutheran didn't just give me a new body with their surgery, they gave me confidence, self esteem, hope and a future I could never dream about before. They not only changed my image, they changed my whole life...for the better!" — Bonnie
"Before my decision to have bariatric surgery, my interaction with my family was almost non-existent. After losing 75 percent of my body weight, I no longer hide behind my body. I ran a 5K with my son, and I was able to go to the amusement and water park with my husband and daughter. And that is something I never would have done before. I am no longer afraid of being out in public and am more confident. And because of Dr. Kothari and the Bariatric team, I have the opportunity to live my life, and I am truly grateful." — Katy
"Not a day goes by that I realize how thankful I am to Dr. Baker for changing my life. I didn't realize how my weight was affecting me emotionally. So many doors have opened since my surgery two years ago. Now, I am able to climb Harney Peak in South Dakota, which I know 100 pounds earlier would have been a huge challenge. My husband, kids and dad all joined together for the walk to Crazy Horse. This is a memory I don't want to forget. Thank you, Dr. Baker, for helping me become the happy person I used to be!" — Wendy
