Joseph C. Moran, MD, FACS, is a board-certified general surgeon specializing in bariatric surgery (weight loss surgery). Dr. Moran has more than 10 years of experience, during which time he has helped numerous patients achieve their weight loss goals and improve their overall health and quality of life. He is one of the few surgeons in North Carolina who have received specialized post-doctoral fellowship training in laparoscopic bariatric surgery. Dr. Moran was also the first surgeon in the greater Raleigh area to offer the sophisticated Realize Band procedure — a testament to his commitment to providing his patients with the safest, most advanced surgical weight loss treatments.

Dr. Moran's extensive education and training allow him to confidently perform a variety of weight loss surgeries, including Lap-Band and Realize Band gastric banding procedures, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and bariatric revision surgery. Depending on the needs and health condition of the patient, each of these procedures can be performed either by the open surgical approach or laparoscopically (with the aid of a small camera and specialized surgical instruments, which are inserted into the abdominal cavity). The minimally invasive laparoscopic approach greatly reduces the size of incisions, the degree of postoperative discomfort and recovery time. Dr. Moran performs all bariatric procedures with meticulous attention to detail and patient safety, consistently delivering outstanding, highly rewarding results.

Dr. Moran was recently chosen to serve on the Allergan Council for Advancement in Bariatric Surgery, and he is actively involved in training other surgeons on the use of the Lap-Band system. In addition, Dr. Moran is a participant in the Lap-Band Out-of-Towner network, and he is also a Lap-Band Total Care Certified Practice Champion. He has performed more than 300 Lap-Band procedures and more than 500 Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgeries.

More About Joseph C. Moran, MD, FACS

Joseph C. Moran, MD, FACS, completed his undergraduate education at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Ross University School of Medicine in Roseau, Commonwealth of Dominica. Dr. Moran completed his general surgery internship and residency at St. Agnes Healthcare in Baltimore, serving his final year as the Chief Resident. In addition, he completed an advanced two-year fellowship training program in complex and minimally invasive bariatric surgery at St. Peter's University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Dr. Moran's education and training have allowed him to earn memberships with several prestigious professional organizations, including the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, the American Medical Association and the North Carolina Medical Society.
