William Richardson, MD, is a Harvard-trained, board-certified surgeon who specializes in bariatric surgery. Dr. Richardson has completed additional fellowship training in laparoscopic surgery, an advanced surgical technique that promotes minimal pain and faster recovery periods. Dr. Richardson has served the New Orleans area for more than 10 years and has helped hundreds of patients obtain healthier lifestyles.
Dr. Richardson and the surgical team of Ochsner Clinic Foundation offer several types of bariatric surgery, including laparoscopic weight loss procedures such as Lap Band surgery, a minimally invasive technique that restricts the amount of food the stomach can hold. They also perform gastric bypass surgery, a permanent weight loss surgery that reduces the size of the stomach to help patients feel satiated with smaller quantities of food. In addition, Ochsner Clinic Foundation is one of the few weight loss centers in the New Orleans area to offer gastric sleeve resection, a new technique of weight loss surgery that can help critically obese patients.
Dr. Richardson also performs revision surgery, such as endolumenal restorative obesity surgery (ROSE), to help patients who have undergone unsatisfactory bariatric surgery elsewhere. The ROSE procedure helps patients whose stomachs have stretched following their bariatric surgery. During ROSE procedure, Dr. Richardson uses endoscopic methods to readjust the stretched stomach to a more restricted position. Because no external incisions are required to perform the procedure, patients can return to their daily activities within a few days.
Ochsner Clinic Foundation offers a comprehensive weight loss program, including educational preoperative seminars, psychiatric consultations, and long-term nutrition guidance from registered dieticians. In recognition of the clinic's outstanding weight loss program, the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery has named the Ochsner Clinic Foundation a "Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence."
