Richard Wilson, MD, is a board-certified surgeon who specializes in weight loss surgery. He has performed more than 300 bariatric surgery procedures. Dr. Wilson is affiliated with the Surgical Associates of Northwest Florida and has served on the medical staff of Gulf Coast Medical Center for more than 16 years. Among his colleagues and patients, Dr. Wilson is known as a highly skilled weight loss surgeon who has changed many lives through the latest bariatric procedures. In addition to weight loss surgery, Dr. Wilson specializes in general, colon and rectal surgery.
Dr. Wilson and his surgical team at Gulf Coast Medical Center perform adjustable gastric banding with Lap Band and the advanced Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. The Lap Band procedure utilizes a banding device that is surgically placed around the stomach, which can be adjusted and/or completely removed, if necessary. Gastric bypass surgery involves rerouting the natural pathway that food takes to a small gastric pouch that restricts food intake, thereby inducing weight loss. Although gastric bypass surgery may be performed as an open surgical procedure, Dr. Wilson uses the advanced laparoscopic approach whenever possible. This approach involves the use of a small camera (laparoscope) and small incisions, a less-invasive technique when compared to traditional weight loss surgery methods.

"Dr. Wilson is a very concerned individual who made me feel comfortable right away. He told me about the surgery in detail and all the risks involved… I really like the office staff, too." Donna M.
"Good doctor. He'll answer as many questions as you need and make sure that everything is going as it should post-op." Brenda W.
"Very good, very professional, he always answered any questions and even though he has a very busy practice he never seemed to be in a rush when it was my turn. The office staff helped me with what I needed to get approved. Very courteous; I feel like Dr. Richard Wilson is very caring and cautious. He advances your diet slower than some surgeons but he and the dietitian seem to feel they are getting better results and fewer complications." Ann M.
