Russell Gornichec, MD, PC, FACS, is a board-certified surgeon who holds specialized training in laparoscopic and bariatric surgery techniques. He serves as a Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery at Integris Surgical Weight Loss Program at the Baptist Medical Center. Dr. Gornichec has been helping patients achieve a healthy body weight through advanced bariatric procedures for more than a decade. To achieve this, he utilizes the latest proven methods of laparoscopic and bariatric surgery in conjunction with a comprehensive medical weight loss program for maximum patient support. Dr. Gornichec holds advanced training in sleeve gastrectomy, which he obtained through a preceptorship at the Cleveland Clinic, Lap Band and Realize Band training and has attended the first Revision Weight Loss surgery symposium held at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

Dr. Gornichec performed the first robotic weight loss surgery in Oklahoma with the revolutionary da Vinci Surgical System. The da Vinci Surgical System is an advanced robotic platform that expands the surgeon's capabilities and ensures a level of precision that cannot be achieved with the human hand. Robotic weight loss surgery with da Vinci involves small incisions, the use of a three-dimensional camera for enhanced viewing and several robotic arms that are controlled by the surgeon's hand movements. With this state-of-the-art technology, Dr. Gornichec continues to develop the weight loss surgery landscape in Oklahoma City.

Dr. Gornichec and his outstanding surgical team offer an array of weight loss procedures, including Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, gastric sleeve, adjustable gastric banding with Lap Band or Realize Band and SILS (single incision laparoscopic surgery) These advanced techniques, which can be customized to best serve each patient's unique needs, allow Dr. Gornichec to reduce the size of the stomach, thus limiting food intake and encouraging long-term weight loss. In order to provide his patients with maximum safety and comfort, Dr. Gornichec performs all weight loss procedures at local, state-of-the-art medical facilities, including Lakeside Women's Hospital, Integris Baptist Medical Center or Deaconess Hospital.

Dr. Gornichec understands that patient support and education is essential to the success of weight loss surgery and therefore offers a comprehensive medical weight loss program that starts with a complimentary seminar where bariatric surgery procedures are explained in great detail. Next, patients are provided with preoperative counseling, and following the procedure they are closely monitored by Dr. Gornichec and his team of qualified nutritionists, psychologists and support group counselors.

"...The decision to have surgery was mine; the decision on whether or not the surgery would happen was his. It was clear and I liked that. He made it clear that if I did not meet all of the pre-surgery requirements that he would cancel the surgery. If you're looking for warm fuzzies and hand-holding, he is not the surgeon for you. If you're looking for a competent physician with, according to my research, one of the lowest post-surgery infection rates, then Dr. Gornichec is an excellent choice. Dr. Gornichec's staff is amazing. Most of my pre-and-post-surgery contact was with Sarah Kitchen, the Bariatric Program Coordinator and Tiffany Bozarth, Bariatric Dietician. They responded immediately to all of my emails and calls, and were very warm and caring. They are both excellent and knowledgeable professionals. The one thing, which I believe will really contribute to my long-term success, is the Integris Bariatric Support Group and meetings. They meet twice a month, and I believe participation is critical to long-term success. Dr. Gornichec made it clear that the surgery was a tool, and only the first step in accomplishing my long-term health goals. He emphasizes exercise, the support group, and long-term office follow ups. I always felt that the only thing he really cared about was seeing me succeed. If I had" —Terry G.

"Dr. Gornichec is a wonderful surgeon. He is thoughtful and caring. He is extremely knowledgeable and will patiently answer any questions that his patients have. I took a list of over 100 questions when I first met him and he very patiently answered each and every one of them. With Dr. Gornichec, there are no silly questions. I highly recommend him. I am at goal and doing well." —Kari H.

"My first impression of Dr. G. was why would this gorgeous hunk want to be in a field where he had patients that are large? But once he started talking to you about the risks that you might have or do have that could change your life; you understood how much he really cares about the problems of obesity. My impression to this day remains the same. His office staff is wonderful and professional; they are very helpful and have always been there to answer any questions or problems no matter how big or small. The thing I like least about him – well it's not that I don't like it, but he is so straight forward and tells it like it is. If you are a future patient looking into bariatric surgery, I strongly suggest you check out Dr. G. He is very professional, caring, thorough and to the point. He stresses that you follow the guidelines of your aftercare. You have a binder that will guide you through every step. There is a structured support group for the aftercare covering different topics at each meeting. It meets twice a month and it's very informative and helpful. When he addressed the risk of surgery, he was very thorough, he explained all the different risks and what the consequences could be. My overall rating on him – He is the best in my personal experience. His surgical competence and bedside manner are absolutely professional." —Jeanne C.

"Dr. Gornichec is very professional and personable. The office staff is friendly and willing to answer questions. After surgery education is important to him and each time I go in for an appointment I receive updated information relevant to my care. Dr. Gornichec did a great job with my surgery and he has a great bedside manner." —Carla M.
