Nilesh A. Patel, MD, FACS, and Rene Jaso, MD, are board-certified surgeons who specialize in weight loss surgery. Together, they have performed more than 2,500 successful bariatric procedures. Their practice was recently featured in Newsweek magazine's showcase section as one of the top bariatric programs in the state. Dr. Patel serves as a national instructor for gastric bypass surgery. He has served as a guest editor of the Medical Clinics of North America and the Surgical Clinics of North America journals. Nilesh Patel, MD, FACS, completed a medical degree at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Pittsburgh. He then performed a residency and fellowship at the Allegheny General Hospital. Dr. Patel is one of the few surgeons in south Texas who have completed a full-year fellowship dedicated to minimally invasive weight loss surgery. Dr. Patel has written many articles that have been published in surgical journals and has presented his research at national and international bariatric surgery conventions. He is a member of the advisory board of the health website Obesityhelp.com and serves as the Associate Director of Bariatric Surgery and Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. In addition, Dr. Patel is a member of several medical organizations, including the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and the Texas Medical Association.

Rene Jaso, MD, completed his medical degree at Michigan State University, College of Human Medicine. During this time, he was instrumental in founding several medical care clinics in rural Michigan. Following an internship at the Hurley Medical Center, a University of Michigan and Michigan State University teaching hospital, he served as a flight surgeon in the United States Army. He then served an internal medicine residency at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, Mayo Clinic. Dr. Jaso trained other medical providers and surgeons in the United States Army and retired as a Commander in 2008. He also co-authored a critical lifesaving skills course, which is now being sponsored by the Department of Defense and continues to be taught worldwide. Dr. Jaso has served on the surgical staff at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. He is a proud member of many professional organizations.
